Helping friends and family

As the family, friend or loved one of a healthcare professional it can be really tough watching them go to work, knowing the stress they are under especially during these difficult times; worrying about their physical and mental wellbeing. It can be hard knowing how best to help and what to do. Take a look at the video below where, Morag Young, a member of the First You steering group and a Samaritans listening volunteer, takes you through our top five tips on how to help the healthcare professional in your life.

Tip #1: Knowledge is power

Grab a cuppa and take 6 minutes to watch Dr Susanna Petche’s third video in her ‘Things I wish I’d learnt at medical school’ 4 part series, ‘Recognising and helping a colleague/partner who is struggling’ … find it in the featured resources on the homepage.

Tip #2: Ask

Want to know the quickest and easiest way to help? Just ask. A simple, “Hey, what do you need right now?” is enough.

Tip #3: Integrate more of the ‘good stuff’ into everyday life

Move more. Eat better. Sleep Longer. Stress Less. Small changes can make a big difference; go to NHS Gifts for more ideas on how … find them in the ‘Living a self-care lifestyle’ section.

Tip #4: Check out the resources available

There’s loads on this website so take some time to have a browse and see which ones might work for you and your loved ones. Special mention to National Health Supporters …find them in the ‘Weathering the Storm’ section.

Tip #5: Look after yourself

The first principle of First You: take care of yourself first before taking care of others. Don’t know where to start? Watch the video of Dr Joanna Martin from One of ManyTM talking about basic needs … find it in the ‘Weathering the storm’ section.

And finally, if things have got too much and you are in emotional distress or at crisis point yourself then please reach out for help. You can do this via text (SHOUT) or by email or phone (Samaritans). Someone will be there 24/7 so please don’t wait…find their details by clicking on the red emergency helplines banner at the top of every page.
